How to import a recipe from Instagram

What you need

• Tableful on iPhone
• The link to a public Instagram post or reel
• A public account: a private one is unreadable by anything but a follower

Step by step

1. Copy the post’s link

Tap the paper plane on the post, then Copy link. Links look like instagram.com/reel/CODE/ or instagram.com/p/CODE/. A link with /reels/ in it, plural, is the scrolling feed rather than the post, and Tableful rewrites it to the post’s own address so that “View source” later opens the recipe instead of dropping you into an endless scroll.

2. Paste it into Tableful

On the Today tab, tap Paste a link and paste.

3. Let your phone do the reading

Instagram tells automated agents to keep out, and a server importing on everyone’s behalf is exactly that. Your phone opening one post because you asked for that post is not. So the fetch happens on the device, and only the caption it read travels on to be turned into a recipe. Tableful’s servers never call instagram.com.

4. Check what came back

Plenty of accounts keep the caption for a hook and write the real recipe onto the picture. When the caption comes up short, Tableful reads the picture too, which is slower but usually the difference between a recipe and a title.

5. Set the servings and save

Adjust the serving count so the nutrition and the grocery quantities match your table, then save. The post stays linked for credit and for going back to the original.

When it does not work

• The account is private. Only a follower can see the post, and Tableful is not one. Screenshot the recipe and use Photograph a page.
• The recipe is on the last slide of a carousel. Instagram hands out one image, the first. Screenshot the slide you want.
• The recipe is in the comments. Screenshot the comment. The photo route reads captions, comments and handwriting equally well.
• The caption is long and cut off. Instagram truncates its own tags at around a thousand characters. Tableful keeps whichever version of the caption is longer, but if the ingredient list is genuinely cut in half, a screenshot of the full caption is the way through.

Questions people ask

Does Tableful log into my Instagram account?

No. There is no login, no token and no access to your account. Your phone requests one public post, the same page you could open in Safari, and sends on the caption it found.

Why is Instagram handled differently from TikTok?

TikTok publishes a caption through a public endpoint built for exactly this. Instagram publishes nothing and forbids automated collection, so the only honest way to read one post is for the person who wants it to read it themselves.

Can I import a whole account at once?

No, and deliberately. Tableful imports posts you choose, one at a time.
