How to scale a recipe for more or fewer people

A recipe for four is the wrong recipe for two, for seven, and for one person who wants leftovers. Change the serving count in Tableful and the nutrition per serving, the quantities and the grocery list all move with it.

What you need

  • A recipe in your kitchen
  • The number of people you are actually feeding
  • No AI use: scaling is arithmetic

Step by step

1. Set your usual serving count once

Tableful’s kitchen preferences hold a default, so imports arrive scaled to your household instead of the publisher’s optimistic four.

2. Change the servings on the recipe

Every quantity follows. The per-serving nutrition stays per serving, and the recipe total moves.

3. Check the things that do not scale linearly

Salt, chilli, baking powder, yeast and cooking time are the four that punish blind doubling. A doubled tray needs longer and a doubled cake does not fit the tin.

4. Ask Tableful to rewrite it when the method has to change

Scale this to 8 and adjust the timings and the tin size is an adaptation, not arithmetic, and it comes back as a rewritten method.

5. Let the grocery list do the multiplication

Once the recipe is on your plan, the list combines the same ingredient across every meal in the week and gives you one line for it.

When it does not work

  • The recipe is written in baker’s percentages. YouTube dough recipes often are. Ask Tableful to scale it to a flour weight: rewrite this for 1kg of flour.
  • The original yield was wrong. Published yields are marketing. Set the servings to what it really feeds and everything downstream corrects itself.
  • Halving leaves you with half an egg. Ask for a rewrite rather than accepting the arithmetic. A method written for three eggs can usually be written for two.
  • You want both sizes. Save the scaled version as its own recipe.

Questions people ask

Does scaling use an AI use?

No. Changing the servings is arithmetic and it is free and unlimited. Asking for a rewritten method to go with it is an adaptation, and that uses one.

Does the nutrition change when I scale?

Per serving, no, which is the point of a per-serving figure. The recipe total changes.

Will it round the quantities sensibly?

It keeps the amounts the recipe can be cooked from. If a scaled quantity comes out awkward, edit that one line by hand.
